You’ve Googled your business before. We all have. You type in your company name — or maybe a search your customers would use — and a page full of results pops up. You either see yourself or you don’t. But here’s the thing: do you actually know what you’re looking at?
Most business owners I work with don’t. They just know they want to be “at the top.” Totally fair. But Google’s results page is more complex than it looks — and understanding what’s on it is the first step to actually showing up there. Let me walk you through it.

Paid Ads: The Fast Lane (That Costs You)
See those first two or three results with the tiny “Sponsored” tag? Those are paid ads — Google Ads, to be specific. Businesses bid on keywords, and the winners show up at the top. The moment someone clicks, money leaves your account. It’s called pay-per-click for a reason.
Paid ads are great for getting visibility fast. But the second you stop paying, you disappear. For most small businesses, ads work best as a short-term boost or a complement to your organic strategy — not a long-term foundation. If you’re running ads without also building organic presence, you’re renting instead of owning.
The Local Map Pack: Gold for Local Businesses
Right below the ads — sometimes above them — you’ll see a map with three business listings. That’s the Local Map Pack, and for local service businesses, it’s some of the most valuable real estate on the internet.
When someone in Hyde Park searches “dentist near me,” that 3-pack is what they’re looking at first. The clicks are high. The trust is high. And it’s free to appear there — you just have to earn it.
What drives your placement in the map pack? Three main things: your Google Business Profile (is it complete, accurate, and active?), your reviews (quantity and quality both matter), and proximity to the searcher. I work with local businesses every day who’ve never touched their Google Business Profile. That’s leaving serious money on the table. If you’re a roofer in Anderson Township, a chiropractor in Blue Ash, or a restaurant in OTR, the map pack is where you need to be showing up.
Organic Results: The Long Game Worth Playing
Scroll past the map pack and you hit the organic results — the blue links that show up because Google decided they’re the most relevant, authoritative answer to the search. No paying for clicks. No map. Just content that earned its spot.
Here’s the deal: organic results get the most trust and, over time, the most clicks. Study after study shows that users trust organic listings more than ads. They feel like recommendations, not commercials.
Ranking here takes work. We’re talking about building pages with strong content, earning backlinks from other sites, and proving to Google that your site is the real answer to what someone’s searching. It’s not overnight. But when it clicks? It compounds. A well-ranked page can bring in traffic for years — without you paying a dime per click.
The truth is — organic SEO is the closest thing to a long-term asset in digital marketing. It’s not fast, but it’s real.
Featured Snippets & People Also Ask: The Answer Boxes
You’ve seen these. A box appears at the top of the page with a direct answer — a definition, a numbered list, a quick how-to. That’s a featured snippet. Google pulls content from an existing page and displays it front and center, without the user even clicking.
Then there’s the “People Also Ask” section — those expandable question dropdowns. Click one and a short answer pops up, pulled from a real website.
These are called SERP features, and they’re incredibly valuable. Why? Because you can rank in a featured snippet even if you’re not #1 organically. The trick is writing content that directly answers the questions your customers are typing into Google. Think FAQ pages, how-to guides, and clear paragraph answers that get straight to the point. This is a content strategy play, not a technical one — and it’s one of my favorite ways to help service businesses build authority fast.
Where Should YOUR Business Focus?
Not every business needs to attack every piece of the SERP at once. Here’s how I think about it:
- Local service businesses (plumbers, roofers, dentists): Focus on the Map Pack + Organic. Your Google Business Profile is your #1 priority right now.
- Service or consulting businesses (coaches, agencies, advisors): Focus on Featured Snippets + Organic. Content that answers questions is your fastest path to visibility.
- E-commerce businesses: Focus on Shopping Ads + Organic. Get your product feed clean and your category pages optimized.
If you’re serious about growing, you need to know exactly where you stand right now. Are you in the map pack? Do you own any featured snippets? Are your organic results even showing up in the top 20? Most business owners genuinely don’t know — and you can’t fix what you can’t see.
The good news: figuring this out doesn’t have to be complicated. That’s exactly what I do when I look at a business’s SERP visibility. We map out every place you could show up, identify where your competitors are beating you, and build a clear picture of the opportunity sitting right in front of you.
